IPTV on MAG Box & Formuler (2026): Setup, Best Models & Portal Login
· 4 min read
1. Why MAG and Formuler are still relevant
MAG and Formuler boxes were designed from the ground up for IPTV. They use the Stalker portal protocol — a server-side interface where the IPTV provider controls the channel list, EPG and layout, and the box is a thin client. This means:
- Faster, leaner UI than Android boxes
- Provider can update channel lists instantly (no app reinstall)
- Lower cost hardware than NVIDIA Shield
The downsides: you're locked into the portal, no Google Play Store, and modern Formuler boxes have moved to Android while keeping the MAG-style portal app for compatibility.
2. Best MAG / Formuler boxes in 2026
1. Formuler Z11 Pro Max (£200)
— current flagship- 4GB RAM, 32GB storage
- 4K HDR10+, Dolby Vision
- Wi-Fi 6, Gigabit ethernet
- Runs Android 11 with custom Formuler launcher
- MyTVOnline 3 app handles portal IPTV beautifully
2. Formuler Z11 Pro (£140)
— best value- Slightly less storage than Pro Max
- Same 4K HDR10+
- Excellent for IPTV — Formuler's MyTVOnline 3 is one of the best portal apps available
3. MAG 540 (£130)
— pure Linux, no Android- 4K UHD
- Stays clean and fast (no Android bloat)
- Ideal if you only want IPTV and nothing else
- Supports MAG portal natively, no app install
4. MAG 524W3 (£100)
— budget pick- Wi-Fi 6 included
- 4K HDR10
- Linux-based, low memory use
- Pairs well with most provider portals
Avoid: original MAG 254 / 256 — discontinued, security flaws, many providers no longer support them.
3. The Portal URL — what it is and why it matters
A portal URL looks like this:
This URL is your provider's Stalker server. You give it to the box; the box authenticates by MAC address; the server pushes back the channel list and EPG.
Unlike M3U or Xtream Codes (which use username/password), MAG portals authenticate by hardware MAC address. This is why your provider asks for the MAC address of your box when you sign up — they whitelist it on their portal.
4. Finding your MAG / Formuler MAC address
- MAG box: Settings → System Settings → About → "Ethernet MAC address" (or printed on the back)
- Formuler box: Settings → System → About → MAC address
Format is `XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX` (12 hex characters). Send this to your IPTV provider exactly as displayed.
5. Setting up MAG portal on a MAG box
1. From the home screen → Settings (gear icon)
2. System Settings → Servers → Portals
3. Portal 1 URL: paste the portal URL your provider gave you
4. Portal 1 name: anything (e.g. "IPTVFree24")
5. Save → restart the box (top-left button on remote → Reload)
6. Channels appear within 30 seconds
6. Setting up portal on Formuler (MyTVOnline 3)
1. Open MyTVOnline 3
2. Hit the gear icon → Add Playlist
3. Choose Portal
4. Portal URL: paste the URL
5. MAC address: should auto-detect (verify with provider)
6. Save and refresh
Formuler also supports M3U and Xtream Codes inside MyTVOnline 3 if your provider doesn't run a Stalker portal.
7. 4K HDR — get the picture you paid for
After setup:
1. Settings → Video → Resolution → choose 3840×2160 (4K) at 60Hz
2. Auto frame rate: ON (so movies play at 24 fps)
3. HDR: enable if your TV supports HDR10 or Dolby Vision
4. Plug into a 4K HDMI 2.0 port (not 1.4, especially on older AVRs)
In MyTVOnline 3:
- Settings → Playback → Hardware decoding: ON
- Buffer: 5 seconds (default 10 wastes RAM)
8. Wired vs wireless on MAG / Formuler
Both Formuler Z11 Pro and Z11 Pro Max have gigabit ethernet. Use it. Even with Wi-Fi 6, ethernet is more stable for live IPTV. A 30-second buffer during a Champions League final is unforgivable.
9. Common MAG / Formuler problems
"Portal not found" on startup
- Wrong URL — double-check with provider (must include `/c/` or `/stalker_portal/c/`)
- ISP blocking — try a VPN
- Provider banned your MAC — contact them
"License limit reached"
- Your account is logged in elsewhere. Most providers allow 1 active stream — log out the other device or upgrade to multi-connection plan.
Buffering on live channels
- Switch to ethernet
- Lower decoder buffer to 3 seconds
- Test with a different IPTV server (your provider may have multiple)
EPG not loading
- Wait — Stalker EPG can take 1–3 minutes on first sync
- Restart the portal app
- Verify the provider has EPG enabled on their server
10. Should you upgrade from MAG to Formuler?
If you only watch live IPTV — MAG is fine, lighter, faster.
If you also want Netflix, YouTube, Plex on the same box — Formuler Z11 Pro Max is better (it's Android underneath).
Most users buying new in 2026 should go Formuler unless they explicitly want pure-Linux MAG.
11. Try IPTV with portal access
Most quality IPTV providers (including ours) offer Stalker portal access alongside M3U and Xtream Codes. [Start a 24-hour free trial](/free-trial) — give us your MAG/Formuler MAC address and we'll whitelist it for the trial.

Frequently asked questions
MAG runs a stripped-down Linux OS — fast, lean, IPTV-only. Formuler runs Android with a custom IPTV-focused launcher (MyTVOnline 3) — heavier but adds Netflix, YouTube, Plex etc. Both support Stalker portal IPTV.
Stalker portal authentication is by MAC address, not username/password. Your provider whitelists the MAC on their portal so the box can connect. If you replace the box, you need to re-register the new MAC.
Many providers have dropped MAG 254/256 due to security flaws and lack of 4K. If you have an older MAG, check with your provider before subscribing — and consider upgrading to MAG 524 or Formuler Z11.
Yes — MyTVOnline 3 supports portal, M3U URL and Xtream Codes API. Use whichever your provider supplies; Xtream Codes is easiest if you switch boxes (no MAC re-registration).
Your IPTV account is being used elsewhere — most plans allow only one active stream. Log out the other device, or upgrade to a multi-connection plan.
